Lindsay Roberts
Lindsay joined Starship in January 2015 as one of the first employees, marking the beginning of an exciting journey in the world of autonomous delivery robots. At that time, Starship was a fledgling startup, operating out of a modest room with four desks and a small team. This was a stark contrast to Lindsay's previous experience at Skype, where the team comprised 600-700 people.
Today, Starship has grown from a small room with four desks to a global company with 421 people across five different countries. Lindsay, now the Director of Autonomous Driving, has been instrumental in shaping the robots that are revolutionizing autonomous delivery.
Initial Impressions
Reflecting on those early days, Lindsay recalls how they didn't even have a proper office. It was just a big room with four desks and five people. The room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. There was a simple frame on wheels and some cables connected. Despite these humble beginnings, the atmosphere was filled with intense dedication and focus, with only one meeting a week and pure, hard work.
Transformation and Growth
As Starship began to grow, the culture evolved significantly. The addition of the first operations team brought new energy and liveliness to the company. Engineers were no longer the only ones in the room. Lindsay fondly recalls the excitement of driving robots outdoors and observing people's reactions to seeing a robot on the streets, a sight that was quite unusual at the time.
Memorable achievement
One of the most challenging and rewarding projects Lindsay worked on was teaching the robots to automatically cross roads. About six to seven years ago, this was a huge breakthrough. The robots were quite autonomous on sidewalks but never on the roads because it was dangerous. Teaching the robots how to detect cars and how to behave in different situations—when to stop and when to keep going—was a significant achievement.
